A recent Pew study showed that for the first time, over half of Americans over 65 are online. The report went on to say that, "34% of internet users age 65 and older use social networking sites such as Facebook."
While Facebook still leads the social media pack with approximately 1.4 billion users every year, YouTube is following close behind. You can count Winnwood in on both of those totals as we not only have a Facebook presence but a lot of videos on YouTube as well.
The news that seniors are using the internet is not surprising to our staff at Winnwood. We've seen an increase in the demand for Internet and computer classed over the past few years, and our activity directors have helped more than one resident ge started on Facebook. While we still have residents that use a typewriter, the vast majority of them now use personal computers an Ipads for correspondence, and many are using Kindles or Nooks for their reading pleasure.
Having all of these technology-savvy residents has a bonus, they let us know immediately if they "like" our Facebook posts!
