Winnwood Retirement Community resident, Ed B. Risse of Marietta, recently enjoyed a wonderful visit to Washington D.C. The trip was courtesy of Honor Flight, an organization which transports America’s veterans to the capital to visit memorials dedicated to their service. Mr. Risse was a captain in the Air Force during World War II and also served in the Korean War.

The trip began in Conyers, where Risse and his fellow veterans were bid farewell by the Rockdale County High School Band, fully decked in their band uniforms. A police escort all the way to the airport ensured they were sent off in style.

Upon arrival at Reagan Airport, fire trucks used their water guns to salute the plane! Passengers applauded and waved to show the disembarking veterans their appreciation.

While there, he visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam memorials, Arlington Cemetery where he witnessed the “Changing of the Guard”, and was given a bus tour of Washington, D.C.

“It was a great day and very emotional,” said Mr. Risse. “I’ll never forget it.”

Mr. Risse lives in the Teem Residence, one of our Independent Living buildings.

A great retirement community is a fun retirement community! And we have a LOT of fun. Recently we had a party for Al Williams, a much admired resident of our Independent Living community. He is known as an excellent conversationalist, good friend, and a “dapper dresser”.  He always looks so nice! His 88^th birthday celebration was a wonderful opportunity for his family and Winnwood friends to honor him.

Albert Williams moved to  Marietta, after leaving Fredericksburg, VA to be closer to his daughter Debbie. He was raised in Brooklyn NY, where he was a train dispatcher for the NYC transportation Department. He also went on to have a 9 year career with J.P.Morgan, in addition to being a WWII Veteran.  After he retired He loved to travel with his beloved wife Catherine, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2008.  He says his favorite part of the day at Winnwood is dinner time! Our favorite part of the day is when we see Al!

Activity Directors, Judith & MJ had a blast [...]]]> Last week, the Teem Lobby was transformed into Bourbon Street as Winnwood celebrated Mardi Gras in true NOLA fashion. Everyone enjoyed New Orleans niceties such as king cake and hurricanes, while Jeni M’s 3-piece band entertained the crowd! Here are some photos from the party:

Jo & Tom's "first dance" [...]]]> Tom Lewis and Jo Allegood met at Winnwood this past year.  They went from table mates to married life on New Year’s weekend.  We were so happy for the couple that we just had to throw them a party. Check out some of the pictures from the reception…..
