We held our first Antique Road Show today at Winnwood Retirement Community! A big thank you to Dave and Tammy Amsler and Big Shanty Auction Co. for making this event a success. Winnwood Retirement Community resident, Ed B. Risse of Marietta, recently enjoyed a wonderful visit to Washington D.C. The trip was courtesy of Honor Flight, an organization which transports America’s veterans to the capital to visit memorials dedicated to their service. Mr. Risse was a captain in the Air Force during World War II and also served in the Korean War. The trip began in Conyers, where Risse and his fellow veterans were bid farewell by the Rockdale County High School Band, fully decked in their band uniforms. A police escort all the way to the airport ensured they were sent off in style. Upon arrival at Reagan Airport, fire trucks used their water guns to salute the plane! Passengers applauded and waved to show the disembarking veterans their appreciation. While there, he visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam memorials, Arlington Cemetery where he witnessed the “Changing of the Guard”, and was given a bus tour of Washington, D.C. “It was a great day and very emotional,” said Mr. Risse. “I’ll never forget it.” Mr. Risse lives in the Teem Residence, one of our Independent Living buildings. For information on Honor Flight, go to www.honorflight.org.
A great retirement community is a fun retirement community! And we have a LOT of fun. Recently we had a party for Al Williams, a much admired resident of our Independent Living community. He is known as an excellent conversationalist, good friend, and a “dapper dresser”. He always looks so nice! His 88th birthday celebration was a wonderful opportunity for his family and Winnwood friends to honor him. Albert Williams moved to Marietta, after leaving Fredericksburg, VA to be closer to his daughter Debbie. He was raised in Brooklyn NY, where he was a train dispatcher for the NYC transportation Department. He also went on to have a 9 year career with J.P.Morgan, in addition to being a WWII Veteran. After he retired He loved to travel with his beloved wife Catherine, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2008. He says his favorite part of the day at Winnwood is dinner time! Our favorite part of the day is when we see Al!
Last week, the Teem Lobby was transformed into Bourbon Street as Winnwood celebrated Mardi Gras in true NOLA fashion. Everyone enjoyed New Orleans niceties such as king cake and hurricanes, while Jeni M’s 3-piece band entertained the crowd! Here are some photos from the party:
There are new and exciting events going on all year long at Winnwood!Check every month for theCalendars forIndependent Livingand Assisted Living.Tom Lewis and Jo Allegood met at Winnwood this past year. They went from table mates to married life on New Year’s weekend. We were so happy for the couple that we just had to throw them a party. Check out some of the pictures from the reception….. The Annual Christmas Party at Winnwood was wonderful! The food was amazing, the entertainment was great, and everyone loved the visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus! Thank you to everyone who donated to Toys for Tots. We had Jonathan’s (the Marine) truck stuffed full of gifts for needy children. Enjoy the pictures from a great evening. Happy Holidays!
Thank you to all who participated in our Christmas Party! At Winnwood, we look forward each year to the chance to visit Macon for the Cherry Blossom Festival. With over 300,000 Yoshino Cherry trees in full bloom, it’s truly a spectacular drive. And the best part of the trip, we get to visit our sister community John Wesley Villas for a Cherry Ice Cream Social. This year we had planned to go for the second week of the Official Cherry Blossom Festival, but most of the trees were just beginning to bud in the last week of March, so we made our trip on April 1st. If you are wondering how Macon, GA became the
Cherry Blossom Capital of the World, the answer is Mr. Fickling.
Finally, after our lovely drive through some of Macon’s beautiful old neighborhoods, we stopped by John WesleyVillas for some Cherry Ice Cream before we headed back home. We had to postpone our trip to the Cherry Blossom festival in Macon because the trees weren’t in full bloom. Still, the weather was warm and we didn’t want to waste a lovely afternoon, so we headed up to 41 towards Cartersville. After a delicious lunch at the Fruit Jar Cafe, we headed over to Dillinger Park in Cartersville. It was perfect weather to get out and feed the ducks and the geese (and the giant catfish)! One of my favorite activities from last year was the Winnwood “Christmas In July” celebration. Residents and staff came together and worked with “Soldiers’ Angels” to collect gifts and write cards to our troops stationed overseas during the holiday season. Here are a few pictures of our party featuring the “Take 3 Trio” singing some of our favorite Andrews Sisters’ songs. ![]() Take 3 Trio ![]() Our Patriotic Tree ![]() "A Salute To Our Troops" Recently, we received a few pictures of the troops opening their Christmas Stockings & our own resident Betty R. received a letter back from a French Major that is stationed in Afghanistan.
AND here is the letter from Betty’s new friend the French Major Michel Souliard…
We are looking forward to our next Christmas In July celebration… THANK YOU TO ALL THE TROOPS! Did we have fun at Winnwood’s Vegas Day? Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words..

See you at our next Party!!!!
We had a jolly good time at our Annual Christmas Party. We had three separate entertainment groups ranging from the Andrew Sisters Impersonators to a Sinatra Singer and a two-man blue grass group. We also had Corporal Kevin of the United States Marine Corps drop by to pick up over 200 toys we collected for Toys for Tots. Next year, we hope to double that contribution!
Santa made sure to stop by with Mrs. Claus. He handed out candy canes and, of course, took everyone’s wish list. The kids were so excited!
